Tennis in the United States is played on three kinds of places: public park courts run by a city or county, member clubs and country clubs with their own pros and leagues, and commercial tennis centers that sell court time by the hour. Public courts are usually free and first come, first served, with a posted limit (often 60-90 minutes when others are waiting); busier cities run online reservation systems with a small fee and a permit for the season. Indoor courts are rented by the hour and booked days ahead in winter. Most facilities are hard courts; clay is common in the Southeast and at private clubs, and grass is rare. Lights extend play into the evening at many parks, sometimes with a coin or app-operated switch.
Hours are published for 7 days a week. Typical hours are 8 amβ9 pm. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. I became a member after moving to Cincinnati in 2025 and loved it. The staff do their best to help newcomers connect with similarly skilled hitting partners via actively maintained mailing lists and an app. The clay courts are well maintained, not to mention much easier on the body than hard courts. Members are age and skill-level diverse. As a 31 year old NTRP ~3.5, I found plenty of compatible hitting partners. I enjoy playing similarly leveled opponents of any age, but compared to past experiences, I found it refreshing to find a critical mass of 30- and 40-somethings to play with. If you are wondering whether this club suits your level, I estimate that players with NTRPs of 4.0 and below comprise this club's primary membership base. I also observed that HPTC is very beginner friendly, with regular clinics that are well-attended mostly by a younger (30s) demographic. Ball machine use is included in membership dues which is a great amenity. The locker rooms and clubhouse are modest and clean. There are no court fees. Courts are first come, first serve and I maybe waited once for all of five minutes. All in all, HPTC is a great value - a rare experience these days.

Hyde Park Tennis Club is a hidden jewel near Hyde Park Square. It has 6 great clay courts that are in fantastic shape. The best part of the club is the members. There are always people willing to play and set up games and there are great pros and social events. Try it!!
